Insulation Options for Your Pole Building

Pole Building in Morgantown

An increasing number of people are choosing to build post frame buildings in Morgantown because of their simple design and adaptability to a wide array of uses. If you already own a pole building in Morgantown or plan on building a Morgantown post frame building, you may be interested in insulating your building.

At MQS Structures, we build farm buildings in Morgantown and other cities every day. Depending on what you intend to use your pole barn for, you may want to choose from the following insulation options:

#1 – Foam Board

Rigid foam insulation boards can be manufactured from various materials, including polystyrene, polyisocyanurate (polyiso), and polyurethane. Thick foam board should never be installed between the steel exterior and the building’s structure. Post frame buildings use exterior metal to strengthen the building’s structure.

Foam board is more difficult to install because it must be cut to fit between posts and is more expensive than fiberglass batts. However, foam board insulates better than fiberglass and is available for purchase with an aluminum facing that can function as a radiant barrier. Foam board insulation is common for pole barns and pole buildings in Morgantown without interior walls.

#2 – Fiberglass Insulation

Fiberglass insulation in batts (rolls) is one of the most widely used insulation materials. Fiberglass is one of the most cost-efficient and easy-to-install options on the market today and is quickly found at most large hardware stores. Though fiberglass is an economical way to insulate Morgantown agricultural buildings, it doesn’t insulate as efficiently as other methods and loses much of its insulating properties when compressed or wet.

#3 – Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is generally the most efficient method for insulating Morgantown farm buildings and post frame structures, but is also the most expensive. Spray foam forms an excellent airtight seal between the interior of the building and the steel siding. It also has excellent insulating properties. However, check with your builder if you hope to spray in foam insulation. Spray foam can make building repair more difficult and may require a heavier gauge steel to spray onto than the standard 29ga.

#4 – Blow-In Insulation (Fiberglass or Cellulose)

Blow-in insulation, fiberglass or cellulose, is typical for attic spaces. Blow-in insulation requires your building to have an interior ceiling but is both cost-efficient and has excellent insulation properties when installed in a thick layer.

It is always best to speak to your barn builder about insulation before building. However, insulation can also be retrofitted if your post frame structure or Morgantown agricultural building has already been completed.
