As pole barn builders in West Virginia, we know that you need a solid building you can rely on when you need it. Quality post frame buildings in West Virginia don’t get built by accident. One of the most often overlooked elements of a building’s design is adequate ventilation. A poorly ventilated building will retain heat, moisture, and suffer early decay. If you are planning on building a new barn or post frame garage in West Virginia, consider these six common types of ventilation.
#1 – Doors and Windows
The fastest way to cool your building down on a hot day and circulate fresh air is by opening all the doors and windows. Although they aren’t technically vents, they are still critically important for ventilation. If you plan on spending long periods inside your new barn or garage hobby shop in West Virginia, you will need ample doors and windows.
#2 – Ridge
Ridge vents have become standard on most modern homes and barns, but aren’t always immediately recognizable from a distance. Ridge vents run along the top ridge of a roof and are typically covered with whatever roofing material is used. They allow warm air to escape through the top of the roof without letting rain and snow inside.
#3 – Soffit
Soffit vents are installed in the soffit underneath the roof eaves. They work in conjunction with ridge vents and cupolas. Soffit vents draw in cooler fresh air from outside and replace the hot air escaping through ridge and cupola vents.
#4 – Gable
Gable vents are installed in the gables of a gabled roof. The gable is the walled section on the side of a building above the walls and below the roof’s peak. See the picture above for more details.
#5 – Cupola
A cupola is a small tower-like structure that sits on the top roof ridge of many classic barns and other buildings. Despite their ornamental appearance, cupolas were designed with large vents to allow hot air to escape out of the building’s highest point.
#6 – Forced Air Vents
Many agricultural buildings, like horse barns, have higher-than-average humidity levels. The most efficient method for ensuring that the moist air inside a humid building escapes is through a combination exhaust fan and vent assembly. Forced air vents use mechanical (electric) fans to actively draw warm air out of a building instead of relying on exclusively natural methods.
