5 Important Design Ideas for Your New Horse Barn

Pole buildings in Ohio

Many horse lovers dream of building a custom-designed horse barn on their own property. At MQS Structures, we not only build pole barns and other pole buildings in Ohio, but we are also custom horse barn builders in Ohio. If you have been dreaming of building a horse barn but aren’t sure how to get started, here are some ideas to consider.

#1 – Build with Room to Grow

One of the first decisions to make when building a horse barn is its size. You obviously need a space big enough to house however many horses you already have, but it’s smart to build at least one or two additional stalls. Most horse barn builders in Ohio suggest that you carefully consider how many horses you hope to keep in your horse barn and then build a little bigger so you have room to grow.

#2 – Build the Right Size Stalls and Aisleways

Stall and aisleway size may vary if you plan to keep miniature ponies or Clydesdales, but the standard size for a horse stall is twelve feet by twelve feet. Larger horses may need fourteen-foot or sixteen-foot stalls. If you plan on breeding, stallions and pregnant mares also need larger stalls.

We generally suggest fourteen-foot aisleways inside your horse barn, but you may choose to build larger if you expect to keep larger horses than average.

#3 – Include a Horse Wash Stall

Although it isn’t absolutely necessary, horse wash stalls are recommended by most horse barn builders in Ohio. During the cold winter months, it’s nice to have a wash stall inside the barn with a proper floor and adequate drainage.

#4 – Design for Plenty of Ventilation

Proper ventilation is vital for all agricultural buildings in Ohio, but it is particularly important for horse barns. Plan to include ridge vents, cupolas, large sliding doors, and stall windows. Depending on your design, you may also benefit from exhaust fans or large ceiling fans.

#5 – Create a Dedicated Tack Room

You may decide to build an elaborate horse barn with all the bells and whistles or a simpler barn with only the basics. Either way, don’t skip building a tack room or tack area in your new Ohio custom pole barn. Tack rooms are the best way to keep your gear clean, dry, and well organized.
