As pole barn builders in Ohio, we know how amazing post-frame buildings can be and all the different ways they are used. Unfortunately, we also know the many myths people believe about post-frame buildings and pole barns. With that in mind, we want to correct some of the untruths we often hear.

Myth #1 – Post-Frame Construction is Only for Agricultural Buildings in Ohio

When most people think of post-frame construction, they think of agricultural buildings in Ohio. Post-frame construction was first popularized for pole barn construction but is also used for many other purposes. Custom post frame builders in Ohio often build post-frame homes, stores, storage facilities, office buildings, restaurants, churches, and more!

Myth #2 – Pole Barns Are Difficult to Insulate and Heat

Although many pole barn owners choose not to insulate their barns, that doesn’t mean they are difficult to heat or insulate. In fact, because pole barns are usually built using six or 8-inch vertical posts, it is feasible to install more insulation in the walls of a pole barn than in the walls of a typical stick-built home.

Myth #3 – Post-Frame Construction is Weak

If you were to compare the frame of a post-frame building and a stick-frame building, it would be immediately apparent that a post-frame building utilizes fewer pieces of lumber. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean that post-frame buildings are weaker. Post frame buildings use large posts buried 3-6 feet in the ground that extend to the roof of the building. This design makes the average post-frame building significantly stronger than the average stick frame building.

Myth #4 – Post-Frame Buildings Don’t Last

Several decades ago, most post-frame barns were built by the farmers and ranchers that used them. They often used untreated lumber or tree trunks as vertical posts. Untreated wood buried in the ground doesn’t last very long at all. Fortunately, today’s post-frame buildings aren’t made that way. At MQS Structures, we only use fully-treated vertical posts that come with a 50-year warranty.

Myth #5 – Post-Frame Buildings Require Too Much Maintenance

A properly built post-frame building needs surprisingly little maintenance. Our buildings come with pre-finished steel siding and roofing in the color of your choice. Factory-finished steel panels won’t need repainting for at least ten years and come with a 40-year warranty. Our vertical posts are guaranteed for 50 years. At MQS, we build pole barns and other post-frame buildings you can rely on!
