A pole building in Ohio isn’t just another building. Pole buildings have a unique style and structure that makes them unique. If you aren’t already familiar, don’t worry. Post-frame buildings are different, but they aren’t overly complex.

Vertical Posts

The vertical posts are the most important parts of a post-frame building’s structure. Unlike most other building designs, the vertical posts in the structure of a post-frame building run the entire distance from the top of the outside wall into the ground. At MQS, we use 6-8-inch laminated posts that we set 42-inches into the ground in concrete footings.

Roof Trusses

Roof trusses are pre-built sections of roof frame designed to support the roof and connect the exterior walls. Because of their complexity, roof trusses are often built off-site in a workshop to ensure the highest standards of quality and precision. At MQS, we build most roof trusses with a 4/12 pitch and space them at 4 feet on center.

Steel Siding

In a post-frame building, you might think of the vertical posts and roof trusses as the skeleton of the building. Steel siding and roofing can be considered the skin or shell of the building. The siding connects the “bones” or frame of the building and adds a great deal to the building’s strength. This is why the quality of siding and roofing matters. Cheap, brittle, or weak siding can compromise the building’s integrity.

Cupolas

A cupola is a small tower-like structure that sits on the top of the roof ridge of many classic barns and other buildings. Despite their ornamental appearance, cupolas were designed with large vents to aid in building ventilation. Many custom post frame builders in Ohio still build barns with cupolas. They are particularly popular for custom horse barn builders in Ohio.

Lean To

A lean-to may sound like a temporary structure, but it is most similar to a porch. Lean-tos on a barn are typically located on either one or both sides and have the appearance of a porch or a room with only one wall. Lean-tos are useful for additional storage or as a run-in-style shelter for animals.
