Horses are beautiful animals and can be lots of fun to own. They also require your attention every day, and care is often time-consuming and expensive. Nonetheless, most horse lovers refuse to be deterred by the cost and complications of horse ownership. If you are interested in building a horse barn or other agricultural buildings in Kentucky but have a limited budget, we can help.

If you have ever walked through a luxury horse barn, you know that the sky is the limit for size, options, and comfort. Building on a budget doesn’t have to mean that you will have an inferior barn. It just means that you must choose your design and options carefully.

Size

Are you hoping to buy your first horse or horses? Do you have a small property and know you will never have more than two or three horses? If so, you probably don’t need a deluxe oversized barn. Build what you need and keep it simple.

Design

Center-aisle horse barns are very popular, especially for large barns. However, if you are building a smaller barn on a budget, you might not need that interior center aisle. Consider building a shed row (or “Shedrow”) barn. A shed row barn consists of individual horse stalls that open into an exterior porch or shed roof. This design will reduce the overall footprint of your barn and require considerably fewer materials. We also highly recommend post-frame construction over other methods. Post-frame design is more robust and less expensive than other designs.

Wait for Non-Essentials

If you are weighing the possibilities of building a horse barn and buying a horse, don’t think you have to have everything at once. The most basic horse barns may only have a couple of stalls and a feed room. Tack rooms, wash stalls, and breeding areas can be built later when more funds are available.
